Last Day in Kingston

Mrs. Braga serving one of the mothers at the
SOS orphanage for the appreciation night.

For Sunday Nov. 27, 05.

Our last day in Kingston, Jamaica was good, and sad )o: at the same time.
We said good-bye to Jorden & Ashely Ross as they went home on an earlier flight.

The rest of us split up into two groups and visited three different churches. Our group ended up at the Church of the United Brethren in Chrsit whose theme is: "Knowing Christ and Making Him known." sound familiar? We found it exciting since Boca Raton Community Church proclaims that we are to: "Know Christ and Share Christ." Little Kimberly Hummel & Danica Weidenbaum recited Psalm 67, Matthew Friend gave his testimony, while others shared scripture. They had a children's choir performing a song while all of us stood up and walked around + gave hugs to every new brother and sister in Christ that we met that day. It was an unforgetalbe Sunday Service.
Eventually we met with the rest of the group at a chinese restaurant for lunch, where we said our good-byes to our new jamaican friends and went straight to the airport to catch a 3:40pm flight to Ft. Lauderdale.
All of us are home and safe. Praise God for an awesome trip to Jamaica!

"Ocho Rios" - you are joking!

For Saturday Nov. 26, 05.

Another beautiful day in Jamaica. Today all of us went to "Ocho Rios" waterfalls. Wow, what a neat experience. We had to hold each others hands tightly so that not one person would be left behind. It was teamwork all the way. One incredible event we had an opportunity to be part of is Matthew McColgan's baptism at the falls.
"We were so blessed to be able to watch as Dr. Alvarado baptized our son, Matt in the Waterfall at Ocho Rios. What a wonderful place to witness God at work on our Mission Trip. It's a moment we will never forget. God is so awesome!" says: Cathy & Jerry McColgan.
There were at least two other missionary groups from the U.S. at the falls. We met them and shared with them as they shared with us what their experience has been in Jamaica.
On the way back we had to find room on the bus for another unexpected passanger (Jorden Ross' super big wooden hand-carved eagle)
After a delicious jamaican meal we went back to the SOS children's orphanage to play with the kids we met on Thursday. We sang songs, danced, performed skits, and just had a great time praising God with beautiful children of Jamaica. They taught us a new praise song + sang it to us at the end as a farewell. What a great day!

Please continue praying for the children of jamaica.

Day 3 in Jamaica

Greetings to the world outside of Jamaica:

(Dan’s part about the orphanage.)

Well, as we write, we are ministering to 4 different groups of Jamaicans in the Youth of Christ Center. The drama teams, along with several adults, are performing and teaching a brand new biblical class in cooperation with the nearby school and the YFC. Lance Weidenbaum’s and Lisa Naus’s groups are performing their skits, while teachers like Ginny, Linda, and Sharon are sharing their experiences with the little ones.
Tonight we’re going back to the SOS orphanage to play with the children for four whole hours. Those children never seem to tire or get bored. They just go crazy at the sight of visitors. It is impossible to stay in one place as they drag you along. We’re being blessed along with the Jamaicans every day. It’s truly a “win-win-win” situation, as Uncle Mo (Dr. Naus) calls it.

Patois 101

we wanted to give you some more details from last night.....

after arriving to kingston we had to rearrange the accomodations list at the first location for the 15th time, locate misplaced baggage and figure out who was sleeping where. but we managed to get through it. the ravenous wolves in our stomachs were calmed with our first jamaican meal of mutton and other traditional foods. mutton, by the way, is goat. we learned more of the jamiacan history and its people and had our first lesson in "patois101" (pronounced patwa). we learned what some of their phrases are and how to use them. "com ya, gimme pass,"

there were 120 graduating students at the rally last night. they have completed a 9 month vocational course and are graduating tonight. we sang, did drama and meissner taught the Word. he crossed the cultural barrier and connected with the nationals. God used him mightily. he talked about people having fears and mentioned that he has a fear of quicksand. he tied it in by giving and analogy of sin being like quicksand and how Christ takes you out of hte quicksand when you believe in Him as your personal Savior. at the end 60 of the 120 students came forward to pray to receive Christ or rededicate their lives. we were able to pray with some of them. it was amazing to see how God works and uses people even when we feel so inadequate for the job. we were able to talk with the students and hear their stories. it is encouraging to see the paths that God has provided for them to take.

we were able to meet as a group for a devotional time led by pastor luis before heading back to the hotels for the night.

o..please pray for benji. his heel was cut open when arriving at the airport yesterday. he is ok, but had to be taken to the hospital last night for some stitches. he is hurting, but is a trooper and isn't complaining. pray that it heals and the pain is taken away.

we love you all. please continue to pray.

Thanksgiving Day in Jamaica

So the alarm going off at 6:00 AM this morning came a lot quicker than expected. we tried to sleep quickly last night...but the, um, youth (they shall remain annonymous) decided to socialize well into the night. but we're not bitter, we're better. no honestly we did get a good night's sleep and were well rested for the 6:45 bus ride to the school. the shower was the kicker this morning. it brought back fond memories of our time in Brazil. the fact that the water was cold wasn't a big deal. we were just wishing we could say that there was cold water becuase of the lack thereof. there was only a trickle (and we're not exagerating). tomorrow aleks and i are opting for a bucket bath because there is more water pressure in our sink than in the shower, literally.

there was rush hour here in kingston this morning and the second bus had a little bit of difficulty getting to the school. but we all made it there safely to find 500 students and their teachers singing "father abraham" and other songs while waiting for the gringos (pastor luis' fond term for the group:) to arrive. pastor luis introduced the multicultural team as a melting pot from south florida. we each have to raise our hand for the country that we were born in: america, china, malaysia, egypt, brazil, serbia and mexico. ryan king led us in worship with "Lord I lift Your name on high" while we sang along and taught the kids the hand motions. chloe played beautifully on the viola which was followed by a drama with nicole, matt, ashley, danica, michael and james. this drama taught the students about the sinfullness of lying. the older kids did their musical drama. we were able to mingle with the students for about 20 minutes. we learned the jamaican hand shakes and in return our boys have passed on "touche" to the jamaican boys:) YEAH MAN! (pronounced ya mon)

10 people went to the juvenille detention center to share hope with those who are believed to be beyond help. we are now at the jamaica youth for Christ office. some are punching holes through walls and breaking boards...don't worry they are supposed to be doing this becuase they are knocking out a wall as their first construction assignment while others clean up after them. while some are using their brauns, others are using their brain. charlie and alain have been setting up the wireless network and a printing server here at the youth for Christ office. allowing us to keep in touch with you.

this brings you up-to-date, hopefully, on the team's activities for now. everyone is getting to know one another and learning to work together and BE FLEXIBLE. the schedule was thrown out of the crowded 28 seater bus window when there were, um a few more than that crammed in there leaving the airport. God has taught us so much already in the short time that we have been here and we're looking forward to all that HE is continuing to teach us. please continue to PRAY for us that we would be a blessing to these dear people and that we can share about the HOPE that we have in Jesus Christ.
we love you all and are thankful for all your prayers and encouragement. we'll update you whenever possible.

this has been brought to you by A2: aleks and ashley

o ya HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! there is so much happening that we had forgotten that today is turkey day. although we did sing "give thanks with a grateful heart" on the bus this morning.

First Day in Jamaica

Praise the Lord, everyone arrived Kingston safely on Nov 23.

In the evening, we went to a youth rally at a vocational school Stone Hills Academy, and celebrated Jamaican students' graduation. Ryan Messiner preached the gospel of Matthew about Peter's story, many students came to Christ with a new or renewed faith.

At the devotional time, many of our children prayed, and we all put a "rock" (Peter) at the feet of the cross.

Thank you, Lord. We sang praises with the Jamaicans! It was awesome time!

More to come, please check back and pray for us. Thank you!!!
